Since 2003 the Grand Prix of Young Polish Print has been organised alongside the Main Exhibition of the International Print Triennial, constituting an integral part of the Main Programme of MTG – Krakow 2015. From the very beginning, the exhibition of young printmakers below 35 years of age has been an important forum for the presentation of the boldest and often uncompromising graphic works. This finds its confirmation in this year’s jury verdict, who selected the winning work after working under the supervision of renowned art critic, Monika Małkowska.

The exhibition at the new gallery of the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow will present works that might become an important, often radical commentary on the ubiquitous iconosphere. Laureates and participants of this year’s edition of the Grand Prix of Young Polish Print sought to make use of the opportunity offered them by their ability to comment on reality through art and presented technically and thematically diverse works. The only worrying element is the fact that young artists, incapable of securing their position on the non-existent Polish art market, avoid taking risks and, in many cases, multiply topics often basing their work on coincidental solutions.

Every time we debate about young art we are hoping that these works will turn our predictions of their limitations upside down. When confronted with this exhibition viewers should try to take the risk of confronting their sensibility with what arouses the biggest emotions and expectations in contemporary printmaking. A direct contact with art always comes with a risk, both for the viewers as well as for the artists – let us take it together, for both groups can experience it as an exceptionally liberating emotion.
