Jury of the International Print Triennial – Krakow 2015: Alicia Candiani (Argentina) – president of the jury, Vladimiro Elvieri (Italy), Dorota Folga-Januszewska (Poland), Carinna Parraman (Great Britain), Endi Poskovic (USA).
The Main Exhibition offers a special opportunity for the viewers to explore recent trends in printmaking and to get insight into its cultural and artistic diversity. It provides a proof of the remarkable variety of creative impulses sparked by printmaking, a medium undergoing constant changes and, at the same time, preserving its separate position in terms of the medium, the idea, and the technique. Seeking to open up to the changes within contemporary art, Organisers of the MTG – Krakow 2015 decided to eliminate limitations in respect to the size of submitted works, as well as accept works that combine printmaking techniques with other means of artistic expression and other creative tools.
How can this year’s edition of the Main Exhibition of the MTG – Krakow 2015 be defined?
The first answers were provided when the members of the international jury, representing three continents, working both as practitioners and theoreticians and coming from various artistic and cultural backgrounds, finished their work.
The Main Exhibition is a clash of large sizes, powerfully expressive surfaces and boldness of forms with works that invite silent reflection and establish an almost intimate relation with an artwork. It is a game between a surface that seduces viewers with the illusion of three dimensions and installations that transform the exhibition space into an extraordinary environment. It is an encounter with both sophisticated geometry and technical mastery, as well as with untamed vibrancy of figurative forms breaking the most sacred technical rules with the purpose of broadening the expressive dimension of the work. The artists on display include advocates of the classic printmaking triad of white, black, and shades of grey, as well as artists who boldly use colours, never failing to employ the most surprising sets of colours.
Most certainly, it is an exhibition that will allow viewers to enter yet again the enchanted garden of art. It will open up the secret hidden in artists’ creations and offer a chance of encountering works whose authors – sensitive to the changes of contemporary world and vary of the everyday problems and historical challenges of the 21st century – move above occasional journalism and constantly convince us that reality has not yet been fully disenchanted. Their works prove that there is still an abundance of extraordinary phenomena, ambiguous forms and meanings that cannot be reduced to the game of ideologies that demand being exposed or to the ubiquitous politicality.
The organisers of the MTG – Krakow 2015 would like to invite the viewers for a journey to the Island of Mysteries, to enter a Méliès-like world where everything is possible. Artists showcased at the Main Exhibition demonstrate that today art is not merely a footnote to reality, but it contains a remarkable creative potential and, just like Julius Verne’s fantastic machines, it can transfer us with the speed of light to the lands we have long forgotten or whose existence we have not been aware of before.
Bunkier Sztuki Gallery is open from Tuesday till Sunday from 11:00 to 19:00.
