TABULA RASA | Joanna Janowska-Augustyn | Grand Prix International Print Triennial – Krakow 2012

The Latin phrase tabula rasa denotes the board with nothing written on it, in other words: a blank page. Selected as the title for this exhibition, the notion was treated metaphorically – somewhat apart from its strictly philosophical interpretation – making references to the broadly understood open possibility. Such open possibility can be found in the incoming moment with its inherent potentiality of being the last moment; in the encounter with another human being; or, finally, in the gradually revealed mystery of the creative process that spans over certain period and is linked with life.

Evoking both the beginning and the end, as well as what lies in-between, the apparent emptiness of the presented compositions is suddenly broken with the image of a naked human body. This body can be more or less concrete, leaving in some instances barely a trace, while in others constituting a realistic representation. In its exposure, the body is usually vulnerable and lonely, facing the overwhelming, impersonal totality of matter. The image of the body, depicted in the technique of classic drawing or rendered digitally in 1:1 scale, is formed over a long-term fascinating process of the study of nature. Thus constituted, for the author, it becomes a foundational experience, just like the presence of another human being is a major experience in her life.

The exhibition will showcase sets of monumental graphic works made in the technique of digital print (10 pieces) as well as classic drawings made with charcoal and pastel (5 pieces); their content was inspired with the philosophy of human beings, especially its dialogic version. The exhibition includes works made over the period from 2006 to 2015. The following series of prints will be included: Deliberations about Body and Soul (2014–2015); Memory (2012); Course of Events (2011); Presence – Loss – Absence (2010–2011); Loneliness (2010); Gate (2009) from the series Inevitable; as well as sequential drawing triptychs: Enclosed – Liberated (2006 – 2007) from the series The Body and Stone.
